Summary
National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC) is undertaking the construction of a thermal power project in Telangana, India.
The project involves the construction of a 4,000MW thermal power plant comprising five units implemented in two phases: phase I of (2x800)MW and phase II (3x800)MW capacity.
It includes the construction of powerhouses, a substation, two eco-friendly chimneys of 275m height each, access roads and related infrastructure, the installation of turbines and generators, and the laying of transmission lines, water pipelines and cement stores.
NTPC has obtained the required land for the development of phase I at the existing power plant.
NTPC is utilizing modern equipment such as a turbine, boilers, and generators, which has already been made available at BHEL Ltd in Hyderabad division and shall be responsible for civil works and erection/ commissioning of the equipment.
The project has already secured environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for the entire project (5x800)MW.
In June 2015, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) was appointed as the contractor for the entire project contract worth US$515 million and the scope of work includes design, engineering, manufacture, supply, construction, erection, testing & commissioning.
The first phase of the project is being constructed with US$1,630 million.
On January 18, 2016, NTPC has entered into a 25 year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with The Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TSSPDCL) (being the lead procurer for TSDISCOMs) for phase I (2x800).
In June 2016, Alstom Bharat ForgeBSE (ABFPPL), the joint venture company between GE and Bharat Forge Ltd has signed a supply contract worth US$219 million to supply two units of 800 MW ultra-supercritical steam turbine generators for the project.
The scope of the contract involves the manufacture and supply of two units of 800 MW steam turbine generator islands along with associated civil works with engineering procurement and construction basis. The equipment for the project will be manufactured majorly at ABFPL's manufacturing facility at Sanand in Gujarat.
The Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) has directed the two power distribution companies (Discoms) in the State and the NTPC to redraft power purchase agreement (PPA) stating there have been a few anomalies.
On August 7, 2016, groundbreaking ceremony was held, to mark the start of construction.
On August 22, 2016, tenders were invited for phase I VIP Guest House, with a submission due date as September 27, 2016.
On August 30, 2016, tenders were invited for phase I staff quarters and field hostel of the project, with a submission due date as September 22, 2016.
On March 20, 2017, tenders were invited for phase I ventilation system of Air-Conditioning and Warm Air Heating Equipment and Commercial and Industrial Refrigeration Equipment Manufacturing; Plumbing, Heating, and Air-Conditioning Contractors with a submission due date as April 11, 2017.
On March 23, 2017, tenders were invited for the construction of phase I cement storage facility for the project.
On May 3, 2017, NTPC announced tender for laying of LT cable and associated miscellaneous works for the project with submission deadline as June 6, 2017.
On December 21, 2017, SN Thakkar Construction Pvt Ltd was appointed as supply contractor to supply Crawler Cranes.
As of March 2018, foundations for the boiler and electrostatic precipitator for structural erections, laying the track hopper foundation, 400KV DC lines and ash dyke have been completed.
Construction activities are underway. Construction activities on unit 1 of phase I is anticipated to be completed by May 2020, while the second unit of phase I by November 2020.
